Safari Transfers in Maasai Mara

Maasai Mara is the crown of the Kenyan safari circuit — the Great Migration, the Mara River crossings, and a lodge selection that ranges from tented camps to flagship safari resorts. Most Mara transfers fly via Wilson Airport on small charter aircraft; some travellers prefer the longer road route for the landscape. We handle both, plus onward lodge-to-lodge logistics inside the reserve.

Wilson Airport and charter flights

Most Maasai Mara transfers begin at Wilson Airport in Nairobi — typically a 45–50 minute charter flight to one of the Mara airstrips (Mara Serena, Keekorok, Olkiombo, Musiara, or Ol Kiombo depending on lodge). We coordinate JKIA arrivals to Wilson departures with flight-to-flight timing that respects the charter check-in windows.

Road transfers to Maasai Mara

The road route from Nairobi to the Mara is 6–8 hours via Narok. Mostly tarmac with a rough final section into the reserve. Worth doing at least once for the landscape; most repeat visitors fly. We use V8 or Prado for the road route — comfort and clearance both matter. Overnight driver accommodation is included in multi-day itineraries.

Lodge-to-lodge transfers

Multi-lodge safari itineraries inside the Mara are common — two nights at a Mara North conservancy camp, two nights inside the reserve, a final night at a tented camp. We coordinate the lodge-to-lodge logistics, often combining short road transfers with inter-lodge flights where the airstrip geography allows.

Vehicle requirements for Mara

Transfer vehicles into the Mara must be proper 4WD with high clearance — our Toyota Prado and Land Cruiser V8 are the standard. Inside the reserve, game drives are run in the lodge's open-sided safari vehicles; our transfer vehicles handle the approach roads and lodge-to-airstrip transfers.

Charter connections and timing

Charter flight schedules from Wilson to the Mara typically have 2–3 daily windows (morning, mid-morning, late afternoon). We coordinate JKIA arrival buffers so connections are comfortable — a JKIA arrival at 06:30 can usually make a 09:30 Wilson charter if customs and luggage go smoothly.

Safari operator coordination

We work with the major Mara operators — Governor's Camp, &Beyond, Angama Mara, Asilia, Elewana, and the independents — and know their specific check-in procedures, lodge pickup patterns, and flight allocations. Returning from safari, we meet lodge-scheduled transfers back to Wilson and on to JKIA or your Nairobi hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I fly or drive to Maasai Mara?
Most travellers fly — it is 45–50 minutes versus 6–8 hours. Driving is worth doing at least once for the landscape and Great Rift Valley views. For multi-night safaris with limited days, fly. For longer itineraries with room to enjoy the drive, road transfer is viable.
Which airstrip does my lodge use?
Depends on the lodge. Mara North Conservancy lodges typically use Mara North airstrip. Inside-reserve lodges use Mara Serena, Keekorok, Olkiombo, or Musiara. Your safari operator will confirm; we match the transfer to the correct airstrip.
How much luggage can I bring on a Mara charter?
Most domestic charters cap at 15kg in soft bags. Hard cases are often refused. We can store excess luggage at our Nairobi office until you return. Plan what you actually need for the safari — most lodges have laundry service.
Do you provide the game-drive vehicle?
No — game drives inside the reserve are run by the lodge in their open-sided safari vehicles. Our transfer vehicles handle Nairobi–Wilson, airstrip–lodge, and lodge-to-lodge logistics.
Can you arrange multi-lodge safari itineraries?
Yes. Two or three lodges over four to seven nights is common. We coordinate the logistics end-to-end, including inter-lodge flights where appropriate and the final return to Nairobi.
Is this the right choice for a honeymoon or milestone safari?
Yes — our safari transfers are built for first-time and milestone-safari travellers where the logistics cannot fail. Clear communication, tracked flights, confirmed lodge pickups, and the kind of dispatcher attention that lets you focus on the safari itself.
