Safari Transfer Checklist: What to Know Before Maasai Mara

20 May 20267 min read

A safari transfer to Maasai Mara is not a logistically complex trip — but it has enough specifics (luggage limits, charter timings, lodge pickup patterns) that small oversights add avoidable friction. This checklist covers what to confirm, pack, and plan before your Mara safari so the whole transfer runs as invisibly as it should.

Confirm these one week before

Your JKIA arrival flight number and terminal. Your Wilson charter flight number and operator. Your lodge and the airstrip it uses (Mara Serena, Keekorok, Olkiombo, Musiara, Mara North — they are not interchangeable). The name your chauffeur should hold up at Arrivals (occasionally a booking is under a different name from the traveller).

Luggage limits for Mara charters

Most domestic safari charters cap at 15kg total, in soft bags only. Hard suitcases are often refused at Wilson. If your international luggage is more, plan to store the excess in Nairobi — most reputable chauffeur services or hotels will hold luggage at no charge. Bring a soft duffel or backpack for the Mara portion; your main suitcase stays in Nairobi.

What to actually pack for the Mara

Neutral colours (beige, khaki, olive). Avoid bright colours (animals), white (dust), and black/dark blue (attracts tsetse). A warm layer — Mara mornings and evenings are cold, especially on open game drives. Sunscreen and sunglasses. A hat with a strap. Binoculars if you have them; most lodges provide them if you don't. Any medications in hand luggage, not checked.

Documentation

Your passport (even for domestic charters, you will be asked for ID at Wilson). eVisa printout for international arrivals. Lodge booking confirmation (occasionally requested at the airstrip). Travel insurance document if you have one. Cash in small denominations for tips (USD or KES both accepted at most lodges).

Timing the JKIA–Wilson connection

Budget 90 minutes between JKIA arrival and Wilson charter departure for a comfortable connection — 60 minutes is possible for carry-on-only international arrivals but leaves no buffer. Your chauffeur handles the transfer; you just need to clear customs efficiently. If your international flight is late, dispatch reschedules the Wilson charter if operator policy allows.

The common mistakes

Packing heavy in a hard case (charter rejection). Assuming Wilson is next to JKIA (it is 20–30 minutes apart). Not confirming which airstrip your lodge uses (wrong-airstrip drops cost time and money). Leaving phone on airplane mode after landing at JKIA (your driver cannot reach you). Forgetting cash for tips at the lodge (many lodges are card-friendly but tips to guides and lodge staff are expected in cash).

The departure reverse

Returning from the Mara follows the same rules in reverse. Your lodge coordinates the morning transfer to the airstrip; your charter returns to Wilson; your ground transfer from Wilson to JKIA or your Nairobi hotel is arranged. Budget for a longer day than you expect — customs out of JKIA on international departures is usually smooth, but traffic to JKIA can be substantial.

Related questions

Can I take a hard suitcase to the Mara?
Not on most charters. Hard cases may be refused at Wilson or at the Mara airstrip. Soft bags only, and check the weight limit of your specific charter operator.
Are lodges flexible on arrival time?
Yes — lodges accommodate charter schedule variance. Most lodges offer a light lunch or early check-in for charter arrivals ahead of the afternoon game drive.
What about medications and health precautions?
Bring your own medications in hand luggage. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the Mara — consult a travel clinic before departure. Lodges have basic first-aid; they are not medical facilities.
